Sometimes families still need learning resources outside the app
A family may use a phonics page from school, a teacher-recommended video, a worksheet site or another trusted learning resource. If an app requires every lesson to live inside its own catalog, it can become disconnected from the child's real learning routine.
KidEnglish therefore supports parent-configured external lesson links. Parents can attach one or more URLs to each child profile.
Allowing a link does not mean turning KidEnglish into a free web browser for children.
Who chooses the links?
Links are configured in the parent flow. The child Home experience only exposes the extra-lesson entry when the selected profile actually has external lesson links.
Roles remain clear:
- parents choose the source;
- children only see sources attached to their profile;
- the child UI does not provide a general URL field or web search box.
How does the Parental Gate protect entry?
Before protected entry points, KidEnglish uses a Parental Gate based on an addition/subtraction challenge.
Challenge difficulty is age-aware so accidental child access is reduced while parent interaction stays lightweight.
For external lessons, a successful gate can be cached for 15 minutes per child. This avoids repeatedly challenging a parent while they move between lessons during the same session.
The cache is not a household-wide unlock; it stays scoped to the child.
Where does the link open after the gate?
KidEnglish uses controlled WebView/iframe boundaries rather than normally sending the child directly into an unrestricted external browser.
Current source includes behavior to:
- reject unsafe or inappropriate navigation schemes;
- keep external lesson content inside controlled boundaries;
- provide Next/Prev navigation when a profile has multiple lesson links;
- maintain separate Native and Web implementations where platform behavior differs.
Parents should know that some external websites block embedding on Web through `X-Frame-Options` or CSP. KidEnglish surfaces a warning about this during configuration. It is a limitation of the source website and cannot always be bypassed safely.
What if the link is YouTube?
The kid-safe YouTube WebView flow keeps key actions such as Play/Pause/Exit under app-owned control and limits direct player interaction, with related/end-state UI constrained where possible.
The purpose is to reduce the chance that one parent-approved lesson becomes a path into unrelated recommended content.
Parents should still preview and choose the video itself. UI controls cannot replace content selection.
How is this different from Shadowing?
Both features can involve video or external links, but they serve different goals:
- External Lesson: lets a parent attach a trusted outside resource and open it through a controlled flow.
- Shadowing: when enabled, uses timestamped video sentences for listen → pause → repeat practice.
A YouTube external lesson does not automatically become a Shadowing lesson.
Why support multiple lesson links?
A child profile can need several resources, for example:
- this week's reading page;
- a phonics video;
- a school worksheet site.
When several links exist, the controlled WebView can expose Next/Prev navigation. That is simpler for a child than a list of raw URLs or multiple browser tabs.
Practical guidelines for parents
1. Open and review every source before assigning it. 2. Prefer simple pages without aggressive pop-ups or advertising. 3. Test the link on the device the child will actually use. 4. If a site blocks embedding, choose another source rather than weakening safety boundaries. 5. Remove outdated links so the child Home screen does not become overloaded with choices.
